James Brown

James Joseph Brown was an American singer, songwriter, dancer and bandleader who lived from 1933 to 2006, regarded as the central progenitor of funk music and a major figure of twentieth-century popular music. Rising to prominence in the 1950s as leader of the Famous Flames, he built a reputation as a dynamic live performer before developing the stripped-down, interlocking rhythms that defined funk in hit recordings such as Papa's Got a Brand New Bag and Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud; he was among the first ten performers inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
