Joao Gilberto do Prado Pereira de Oliveira was a Brazilian guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer who lived from 10 June 1931 to 6 July 2019, credited as the father of bossa nova for pioneering the genre in the late 1950s by blending samba with jazz. His 1964 album Getz/Gilberto, recorded with American saxophonist Stan Getz, became the first jazz record to win the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and he later won a further Grammy in 2001 for Joao voz e violao. He worked extensively with composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and was known in Brazil as O Mito, the Myth.
