Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was a Pakistani singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who lived from 13 October 1948 to 16 August 1997, primarily associated with qawwali, the Sufi devotional music of Pakistan and India. Known as the Shahanshah-e-Qawwali, he became head of his family's qawwali party in 1971 and, signed by Oriental Star Agencies in the early 1980s, carried qawwali to international audiences across more than 40 countries during a 25-year career. He also profoundly influenced Pakistani and Indian popular music and Bollywood film composition, and was recognized as a master of Hindustani classical music.
