Ray Charles was an American singer, pianist and composer who lived from 1930 to 2004, credited as one of the pioneers of soul music for fusing gospel, rhythm and blues and jazz styles in recordings such as I Got a Woman in 1954 and What'd I Say in 1959. Blind from childhood, he went on to record genre-crossing work including the country album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music in 1962, broadening his audience well beyond rhythm and blues.
