Youssou N'Dour is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician and politician born on 1 October 1959, credited with developing and popularizing mbalax, a genre blending traditional Senegambian music with Latin and contemporary styles. Rolling Stone has called him perhaps the most famous singer alive in Senegal and much of Africa, and he has collaborated with international artists including Peter Gabriel, Sting and Paul Simon, winning a Grammy Award in 2005 for his album Egypt. Beyond music he served as Senegal's Minister of Tourism from 2012 to 2013 and owns Groupe Futurs Medias, a major Senegalese media company.
