It shows a woman traditionally identified as Margherita Luti, a baker daughter said to have been Raphael mistress in Rome, who also appears to be the sitter in Raphael later painting La Fornarina. The portrait is admired for its opulent, richly detailed rendering of the sitter clothing, a hallmark of Raphael portraiture in this period of his career.
