Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter who lived from 1774 to 1840 and is generally considered the most important German artist of his generation. His symbolic, anti-classical paintings convey a subjective, emotional response to nature, often placing contemplative human figures against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins, as in Wanderer above the Sea of Fog and The Sea of Ice. His reputation declined after his death but revived from 1906 onward, and he influenced Expressionist, Surrealist and Existentialist art before becoming recognized as a central figure of German Romanticism and a national cultural icon.
