Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, who restyled his name Piet Mondrian around 1911, was a Dutch painter born in Amersfoort in 1872 and died in New York City in 1944. With Theo van Doesburg he co-founded the De Stijl movement in the Netherlands in 1917, and developed the theory he called Neoplasticism, set out across twelve installments of De Nieuwe Beelding in de Schilderkunst (1917-1918) and later published in French as Le Neoplasticisme (1920), reducing painting to horizontal and vertical black lines and the three primary colors alongside black, white and gray.
