Portrait of George Dyer and Lucian Freud

Portraits

Portrait of George Dyer and Lucian Freud is a 1967 oil-on-canvas painting, measuring 78 by 58 inches, by the Irish-born British painter Francis Bacon. It depicts Bacon's lover George Dyer, shown fully clothed in jacket, shirt and tie for the first time in any of Bacon's portraits of him, seated beside the painter Lucian Freud, whose tensely gripped hands rest on his own leg, against a backdrop of heavy green curtains recalling those in Bacon's own studio and echoing the folds of his earlier 1950s series of paintings after Velazquez's Pope Innocent X. Bacon, notorious for destroying works he judged unsuccessful, later destroyed the canvas, so it survives today only through photographs taken before its destruction; despite this, art critics continue to regard it as an important work in Bacon's output of the period.
