Equestrian Portrait of Elisabeth of France

Equestrian Portrait of Elisabeth of France is an oil-on-canvas painting made around 1635 by the Spanish court painter Diego Velázquez, measuring 301 by 314 centimeters and held today by the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It shows Elisabeth of France, queen consort of Spain, in profile on horseback, wearing a jacket embroidered with stars and a gold-embroidered skirt bearing her initials, her horse depicted as an overo performing the passage gait and facing left so as to mirror a companion equestrian portrait of her husband. Commissioned originally for the Hall of Realms at the Buen Retiro Palace, the painting has belonged to the Prado's collection since the museum's founding in 1819; technical study has found significant workshop participation beneath Velázquez's own retouching of the queen's garments and the horse's trappings.
