Portrait of a Young Woman (La Muta)

Portrait of a Young Woman, known as La Muta, is an oil on wood panel painting made around 1507 to 1508 by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael, held at the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche in Urbino. It shows an unidentified noblewoman set against a near-black background, painted with close attention to the detail of her clothing and the luminous rendering of her skin. Long debated in attribution, the portrait is now recognized as one of Raphael's finest and is noted for showing the influence of Leonardo da Vinci as well as for anticipating the dramatic light and dark contrasts later associated with Caravaggio.
