Portrait of the Artist's Mother at the Age of 63

Portraits

Portrait of the Artist's Mother at the Age of 63 is a charcoal drawing made in March 1514 by the German artist Albrecht Durer, showing his mother, Barbara Holper, about two months before her death. The drawing is inscribed with the date and with German text identifying her as the artist's mother at age 63, and records her peaceful death on the Tuesday before Whitsun that year. It presents an unflinching, close physical study of her aging and illness alongside evident affection, and is held in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin.
