Abstract and Modernist Paintings

Paintings whose primary character is non-representational, or whose modernist, surrealist or expressionist treatment of form and color is the work's own defining subject rather than a legible narrative, portrait or landscape scene. Belongs here: pure abstraction, cubist and proto-cubist compositions, surrealist and symbolist works built around invented imagery, and pop-art compositions built from repeated commercial imagery. Does not belong here: a modern-period painting that is still primarily a legible portrait, landscape or narrative scene, which belongs under the genre its subject actually depicts regardless of the era or movement it was painted in.
