Apparatus and Hand

Apparatus and Hand is an oil-on-panel painting made by Salvador Dalí in 1927, now held by the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. The composition centers on a geometric figure built from cones and triangles, from whose head a swollen red hand emerges, set against ghostly nude female forms and a dreamlike blue background suggestive of water. A donkey being consumed by flies appears at left and a classically posed female figure at right. Painted during what is often called Dalí's Freudian period, the work reflects his early engagement with Sigmund Freud's psychological theories and the dream symbolism that carried into his formal association with the Surrealist movement two years later.
