A large carved basalt disc created by the Aztec (Mexica) civilization in the late fifteenth century, bearing a central solar deity face surrounded by symbols recording Aztec cosmology and the calendar. Rediscovered beneath the Zócalo in Mexico City in 1790, it is now one of the most recognized surviving works of Mesoamerican art.
