Bauhaus Dessau, also known as the Bauhaus Building Dessau, is a building complex in Dessau-Rosslau, Germany, constructed in 1925 and 1926 to designs by Walter Gropius as the school building for the Bauhaus School of Art, Design and Architecture. It was built after the school's move from Weimar, as local politicians sought to reconcile the city's industrial character with its cultural ambitions, and its stripped, functional design helped establish the Bauhaus's reputation as an icon of architectural modernism. The building was damaged in the Second World War, largely reconstructed from 1965 onward, and restored again between 1996 and 2006 according to historical preservation principles. Since 1996 it has formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bauhaus and its Sites in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau.
