An opera by the French composer Georges Bizet, first performed in 1875, telling of the fiery Romani woman Carmen and the soldier Don José whose obsession with her leads to tragedy. Poorly received at its premiere, it went on to become one of the most frequently performed operas in the world, prized for melodies including the Habanera and the Toreador Song.
