Coppelia is a comic ballet first performed in 1870, choreographed by Arthur Saint Leon to music by Leo Delibes, with a libretto by Charles Louis Etienne Nuitter based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's short story Der Sandmann. It premiered at the Theatre Imperial de l'Opera in Paris with the sixteen year old Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the lead role of Swanhilda. The ballet remains a staple of the classical repertoire and is known for its comic tale of a doll maker's uncannily lifelike creation.
