Erlkonig, composed by Franz Schubert in 1815 when he was eighteen and published in 1821 as his Opus 1, sets Goethe's 1782 ballad about a father riding through the night with his dying son, pursued by a supernatural spirit, and is one of Schubert's most celebrated songs.
