Golden Haggadah

Illuminated Manuscripts and Calligraphic Works

The Golden Haggadah is an illuminated Hebrew manuscript made in Catalonia around 1320 to 1330, containing the text recited at the Jewish Passover seder alongside decorated liturgical text and poems. It carries fourteen full-page miniatures set against burnished gold backgrounds, painted in a High Gothic style with Italian influence, and is one of the earliest surviving illustrated Haggadot from Spain to include a complete pictorial sequence covering the books of Genesis and Exodus. Held today by the British Library in London, it is regarded as one of the most distinguished illuminated manuscripts produced in medieval Spain.
