Infinity Mirrored Room

Sculptural Works

Infinity Mirrored Room is the title Yayoi Kusama has used since 1965 for an ongoing series of immersive installation environments, each built from mirrored walls and ceilings enclosing lights, water, sculptural objects or Kusama's signature polka-dot forms, so that a single visitor standing inside experiences an apparently endless, repeating field of reflections. Growing out of Kusama's long-standing use of repetition and dot patterns to convey both self-obliteration and infinite accumulation, the series has been produced in many individual versions, held by museums around the world, and has become one of the most widely photographed and popularly recognized bodies of work in contemporary installation art.

From 1963, Kusama continued her series of Mirror/Infinity rooms. In these complex infinity mirror installations, purpose-built rooms lined with mirrored glass contain scores of neon-colored balls, hanging at various heights above the viewer.

These typically involve a cube-shaped room lined in mirrors, with water on the floor and flickering lights; these features suggest a pattern of life and death.
