Interchange (de Kooning)

Interchange is a 1955 abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas, measuring 200.7 by 175.3 centimeters, by the Dutch-American painter Willem de Kooning, one of the leading figures of the movement alongside Jackson Pollock. The painting marks a transitional point in de Kooning's career, moving away from the explicit female figures of his earlier work toward an abstracted rendering of New York's architecture and street life, though a fleshy pink mass at the canvas's center still suggests a seated woman; the loose, gestural brushwork reflects the influence of the painter Franz Kline. De Kooning originally sold the work through the Sidney Janis Gallery for 4,000 dollars to the architect Edgar Kaufmann Jr; it later sold at Sotheby's in 1989 for 20.7 million dollars to the Japanese dealer Shigeki Kameyama, passed to the collector David Geffen, and sold again in 2015 to the hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin for 300 million dollars, at the time the second-highest price ever paid for a painting, behind only Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi.
