L'Orfeo is Claudio Monteverdi's opera on the myth of Orpheus, first performed in Mantua in 1607. Building on the Florentine Camerata's stile rappresentativo pioneered by Jacopo Peri's Dafne (1598), Monteverdi's setting far surpassed its Florentine predecessors in musical complexity and dramatic interest, and it is widely treated as the first opera to combine sustained musical sophistication with genuine theatrical drama.
