Le Berceau (The Cradle) depicts Morisot's sister Edma Pontillon watching over her sleeping infant daughter Blanche. Shown at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, it went unsold in Morisot's lifetime and remained in the sitter's family until the Louvre acquired it in 1930; it later transferred to the Musee d'Orsay.
