Lindisfarne Gospels

Illuminated Manuscripts and Calligraphic Works

The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated Latin gospel book produced probably around the years 715 to 720 at the monastery on Lindisfarne, off the coast of Northumberland in northern England. It is considered one of the finest surviving works in the Hiberno-Saxon or Insular style, combining Mediterranean, Anglo-Saxon and Celtic decorative traditions in its ornament. The manuscript is now held by the British Library in London.
