Moses (Michelangelo)

Sculptural Works

Moses is a marble statue carved by Michelangelo around 1513 to 1515, showing the biblical lawgiver seated and gripping his beard, part of the unfinished tomb of Pope Julius II. Julius II had commissioned the tomb in 1505, but the monument was not completed in its reduced final form until 1545, and the statue is now installed in the Basilica of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. It is celebrated for its technical mastery and emotional intensity, drew praise from the sixteenth-century biographer Giorgio Vasari, and later inspired a detailed 1914 psychological analysis by Sigmund Freud; Rome's Jewish community has long regarded the statue as its own.
