The Murasaki Shikibu Nikki Emaki is a Japanese illustrated handscroll made in the mid-13th century, during the Kamakura period, based on the private diary that Murasaki Shikibu, a lady-in-waiting at the Heian court and author of The Tale of Genji, kept around 1008 to 1010. Painted in the yamato-e style, it revives the artistic conventions of the Heian court roughly two centuries after the diary was written. Four scrolls survive today in varying condition, dispersed among the Fujita Art Museum in Osaka, the Gotoh Museum and Tokyo National Museum in Tokyo, and private collections, with portions designated a National Treasure or Important Cultural Property of Japan.
