Music, also known by its French title La Musique, is a large 1910 oil-on-canvas painting by Henri Matisse, measuring 260 by 389 centimeters. It was commissioned by the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin, who hung it opposite Matisse's companion painting Dance on the staircase of his Moscow residence. Matisse worked on the wall-sized canvas without preparatory sketches, and the finished surface still carries visible traces of his changes as he worked. Like Dance, the painting was conceived to express a state of human completeness reached through immersion in creativity, rendered through simplified, flatly colored figures.
