An Ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles, first performed around 429 BCE, in which King Oedipus of Thebes unknowingly fulfills a prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. Aristotle cited it in the Poetics as the model of tragic structure, and it remains one of the most widely studied plays in the Western dramatic canon.
