Peterhof Palace is a series of palaces and gardens in Petergof, Saint Petersburg, Russia, commissioned by Peter the Great as a direct response to the Palace of Versailles built by Louis XIV of France, which earned it the nickname the Russian Versailles. The architect Domenico Trezzini worked on the palace between 1714 and 1728, developing the Petrine Baroque style later favored throughout Saint Petersburg, while Jean Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond designed the gardens beginning in 1714 and Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli completed a further expansion between 1747 and 1756 for Elizabeth of Russia. The palace ensemble, together with the Saint Petersburg city center, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
