Prometheus is a fresco completed in June 1930 by the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco in the Frary Dining Hall at Pomona College in Claremont, California, his first major mural commission in the United States. The four-panel composition, roughly six by eight and a half metres, shows the Titan Prometheus straining upward to deliver fire to a crowd of human figures below whose reactions range from adoration to fear and rejection. Widely credited as the first modern fresco painted in the United States, it launched Orozco's American career and profoundly influenced later American artists, including Jackson Pollock, who called it the greatest painting produced in North America.
