José Clemente Orozco

Painters

Jose Clemente Orozco was a Mexican painter and one of the three central figures, alongside Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, of the Mexican muralist movement that followed the Mexican Revolution. His large-scale public murals, painted in fresco on the walls of government buildings and universities in Mexico and the United States, addressed themes of revolution, industrialization, and human suffering with a darker, more tragic and expressionistic tone than the more overtly political optimism found in Rivera's work. Major cycles include his murals at the Palacio de Gobierno in Guadalajara and at Dartmouth College's Baker Library, where his epic sequence The Epic of American Civilization remains one of the most significant fresco cycles in the United States.
