Prophet Joel (Michelangelo)

The Prophet Joel is one of seven Old Testament prophets Michelangelo painted on the Sistine Chapel ceiling in the Vatican, made between about 1508 and 1512. It shows the biblical prophet Joel, author of the Book of Joel, seated and absorbed in an open scroll, rendered with rhythmic drapery folds and a face art historians have read as combining wisdom, disdain and intense concentration. The fresco measures about 390 by 380 centimeters and remains in place on the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
