The Salk Institute for Biological Studies is a scientific research institute in the La Jolla community of San Diego, California, founded in 1960 by Jonas Salk, developer of the polio vaccine, with Jacob Bronowski and Francis Crick among its founding consultants. Construction of its research facilities began in the spring of 1962, and the institute has consistently ranked among the top life sciences research institutions in the United States.
