Single Form is a bronze abstract sculpture over six metres tall created by the British sculptor Barbara Hepworth between 1961 and 1964, installed outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where it stands as a memorial to Dag Hammarskjold, the UN Secretary-General killed in a plane crash in 1961. Hepworth and Hammarskjold had corresponded and become friends through his interest in her work, and after his death the United Nations commissioned the piece as a permanent tribute, drawing on the tall, pierced, single upright forms Hepworth had developed across her career to suggest both an abstracted human presence and a sense of quiet, monumental stillness. It remains among Hepworth's largest and most prominent public commissions.
