A Kunqu opera by the Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu, completed in 1598, telling of a young woman who dies of lovesickness for a man she has only seen in a dream and is later restored to life by the strength of that love. Regarded as one of the masterpieces of Ming-dynasty theatre, it remains a cornerstone of the Kunqu repertoire.
