The Sleeping Gypsy is an 1897 oil on canvas painting by the French Naive artist Henri Rousseau, now in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It presents a fantastical night scene in which a maned lion approaches to sniff a sleeping woman, identified as a Romany gypsy, who lies in an arid desert landscape beneath a starlit sky and full moon, dressed in a long striped robe and resting on similarly patterned fabric with a staff, a mandolin and a water jar beside her. The painting was donated to the Museum of Modern Art by Olga Guggenheim in 1939 and today hangs near Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night.
