The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist, commonly called the Burlington House Cartoon, is a large drawing by Leonardo da Vinci made in charcoal with black and white chalk on eight sheets of paper glued together. It shows the Virgin Mary seated on the lap of her mother Saint Anne, holding the infant Christ, who reaches toward his young cousin John the Baptist, a composition Leonardo explored in more than one version during his career. Believed to have been made as a design study, possibly connected to a commission from King Louis XII of France, no finished painting by Leonardo based directly on this exact composition survives, and the drawing is prized as the only large-scale cartoon by the artist to have come down to the present day.
