Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779) was a painter born in Bohemia of German and Danish descent who became a leading figure in advancing Neoclassical painting against the popular Rococo style of his era. His career took him through Dresden, Rome and Madrid, where he served as first painter to Frederick Augustus, Elector of Saxony, and later worked for the Spanish court, producing ceiling frescoes for the Royal Palace of Madrid.
