Dmitri Shostakovich was a Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist who became internationally known after the 1926 premiere of his First Symphony and was thereafter regarded as a major composer. Over a long career he completed fifteen symphonies and fifteen string quartets, working under a Soviet cultural apparatus that alternately celebrated and denounced him, most famously condemning his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District in 1936. His Seventh Symphony, written during the Nazi siege of Leningrad, became an international symbol of wartime resistance.
