Eugene Gladstone O'Neill Sr. was an American playwright who lived from 1888 to 1953. His poetically titled plays were among the first to bring the dramatic techniques of realism associated with Chekhov, Ibsen and Strindberg into American theater. He was awarded the 1936 Nobel Prize in Literature and is the only playwright to win four Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, with his tragedy Long Day's Journey into Night often ranked among the finest American plays of the twentieth century.
