Felix Mendelssohn

Composers

Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer, pianist, organist, and conductor of the early Romantic era, and one of the most popular composers of his time. His best-known works include the String Octet written at sixteen, the overture and incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream, which contains his famous Wedding March, the Italian and Scottish symphonies, the Violin Concerto, and the oratorios St Paul and Elijah. Mendelssohn was also a decisive figure in the revival of interest in Johann Sebastian Bach, most notably through his landmark 1829 performance of the St Matthew Passion, and his own comparatively conservative, formally disciplined style led Robert Schumann to call him the Mozart of the nineteenth century.
