George Gershwin (1898 to 1937) was an American composer and pianist whose work spanned jazz, popular music and classical music. Among his best known compositions are the songs Swanee and Fascinating Rhythm, the orchestral works Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, his Piano Concerto, the jazz standards Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm, and the opera Porgy and Bess, which included the song Summertime. His musical Of Thee I Sing was the first musical to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, though as its composer he did not personally receive the award under the prize rules of the time.
