Giuseppe Bazzani

Giuseppe Bazzani was an Italian painter of the Rococo period, born in Mantua on 23 September 1690 and died there on 17 August 1769, who spent nearly all his career in that declining provincial city. His work is marked by loose brushwork, dark and fervid emotion and tortured poses, drawing on Rubens, Alessandro Magnasco, Domenico Fetti and Federico Bencovich but combining these influences into a personal style closer to the traditions of Lombardy than to typical Rococo taste. From 1752 he taught at Mantua's Academy of Fine Arts, becoming its director in 1767, and his pupil and adopted son Domenico Conti Bazzani went on to become a prominent Neoclassical painter in Rome.
