Irma Stern was a South African painter whose vividly colored, thickly painted portraits and still lifes made her one of the leading figures of South African modernism in the twentieth century. Trained in Germany and influenced by German Expressionism, she brought an intense, expressive palette and confident, textured brushwork to depictions of South African and, later, Central African subjects encountered on extensive travels through Zanzibar, the Congo, and Madagascar. Stern's work was controversial in its own time, both for its bold modernist style, which conservative South African critics initially rejected, and for the colonial gaze evident in some of her depictions of Black subjects, a tension that continues to shape critical assessment of her legacy.

Early life, German studies sentence
In 1913 Stern studied art in Germany at the Grand-Ducal Saxon Art School, Weimar, in 1914 at the Levin-Funcke Studio and notably from 1917 with Max Pechstein, a founder of the Novembergruppe.
