Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer whose symphonic works became closely identified with Finnish national identity during the country's movement toward independence from Russia. His tone poem Finlandia, composed in 1899 amid Russian censorship, was heard as a defiant expression of Finnish nationalism and remains his most widely recognized piece, while his seven symphonies, composed between 1899 and 1924, are valued for their organic formal development and their evocation of the northern landscape. After completing his Seventh Symphony and the tone poem Tapiola, Sibelius largely stopped composing for the last three decades of his life, a silence that has itself become a subject of musical study.
