Joseph Haydn (1732 to 1809) was an Austrian composer who wrote over one hundred symphonies across a forty-year career and is credited as the defining figure of the Classical symphony for his contributions to its harmonic language, key relationships, and orchestral color, a title that somewhat overstates any one composer's role but accurately marks his transformative influence on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven, who inherited his four-movement template.
