Moliere was a French playwright and actor who lived from 1622 to 1673, widely regarded as the greatest writer of comedy in the French language and founder of a theatre troupe that became the basis of the Comedie-Francaise. He is known for plays including Tartuffe in 1664, The Misanthrope in 1666 and The Imaginary Invalid in 1673, satirizing hypocrisy, vanity and the pretensions of French society under Louis XIV, who was also his patron.
