Oscar Wilde

Dramatists and Playwrights

Oscar Wilde was an Irish playwright, novelist and wit who lived from 1854 to 1900, one of the most celebrated figures of the London stage in the 1890s. He is known for comedies of manners including Lady Windermere's Fan in 1892 and The Importance of Being Earnest in 1895, prized for epigrammatic dialogue satirizing Victorian social convention. His career and public reputation were destroyed in 1895 when he was tried and imprisoned for gross indecency.
