Pierre Corneille was a French tragedian generally considered one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Moliere and Racine, and is often regarded as the founder of French classical tragedy. His 1637 play Le Cid became enormously popular with audiences even as it provoked a famous critical quarrel over whether it properly observed the dramatic rules of neoclassical theatre. Other major tragedies include Cinna and Polyeucte.
